island rain
gulls poking for worms
in the garden
riversong
birch catkins swaying
at the end of a branch
after the rain
stealing a spray
of my neighbor’s forsythia
first vireo
following its song
deeper into the woods
the river rising
with spring rain
sidewalk protest songs
stream crossing
maple flowers spangle
the stepping stones
hairy cap moss
the doe watches me
walk away
raven’s call —
the cracks of cobbles
rolled by a storm surge
whiff of skunk . . .
a roadside ditch brimming
with coltsfoot
spring sun —
on the back porch savoring
a peanut butter cup
emerging birch catkins . . .
a fat-cheeked chipmunk
dashes under the shed
