One of the world’s most popular poetic forms, the haiku is a tiny poem that takes a few minutes to learn and a lifetime to master. This haiku craft talk led by Kristen Lindquist will introduce poets and readers to the contemporary English-language haiku through a presentation of diverse haiku that feature birds. The haiku in English has evolved as a primarily nature-based, often meditative form that shares ephemeral moments through sensual imagery. As a part of nature that is easily observed, birds are the perfect subject for the haiku poet to explore. Through the lens of birds, she will share a brief history of the form, discuss how one reads and writes a haiku (hint: it’s not 5-7-5!), and offer up examples and a prompt that will hopefully inspire your own work and your awareness of the birds around you.
