the river swells
with more rainwater . . .
snowdrops
wind pushes open
the rusty garden gate
first grackles
March gusts —
sand sifts through
a broken snail shell
distant lighthouse —
a hunting harrier
skims the dunes
a blue jay
imitates an eagle
false spring
Boston traffic
the hawk’s quick pivot
for a pigeon
early March a touch of spring in the wind chimes
first warm day
a hawk snatches
a finch from the feeder
reflecting on
what’s left of winter
rain on lake ice
rain softening
old snow — one crow
preens the other
zesting a lemon
for the teacake —
winter wrensong
