early chill
somewhere up the street
a tanager singing
a pheasant hen
hunches over her chicks
lingering chill
***
Happy Mother’s Day to mothers everywhere!
lingering cold
the distant scold calls
of a hermit thrush
scattered snowflakes —
bloodroot leaves curled tight
around their buds
clear and cold
pigeons huddle
on the roof’s sunny side
wind chill
an eagle on lake ice
holds its pose
below zero snow buntings line a roof peak
ice-blue sky
a squirrel crosses the field
in our snowshoe tracks
polar vortex
the UPS guy
still wearing shorts
single-digit cold
the glow of a streetlight
through icicles
buzz of a junco
from the underbrush —
polar gusts
