pushing back my hood
to hear the kinglet . . .
rain-wet cedars
spruce needle rain . . .
a sparrow attempts the song
his father sang
ravens at dawn
a version of the story
that rings true
spruce-filtered sun
the nonstop nattering
of nuthatches
baby apples
beginning to redden
a catbird’s rambling song
a thrush’s song
deep in the woods —
storm clouds pass us by
afternoon haze
the incessant whining
of young crows
river swelling with rain the rattle of a wren
waves wet
the beach cobbles . . .
cooing eiders
twilight chill
a distant woodcock
repeats his call
new leaves the green in a warbler’s song
