lazy snowflakes
the song sparrow tries
a short song
a few phrases of finch . . .
the river rock’s moss
stippled with snow
winter mist
trying to track the caws
to the crow
buzz of a junco
from the underbrush —
polar gusts
autumn leaves acknowledging the crow’s caws
pushing back my hood
to hear the kinglet . . .
rain-wet cedars
spruce needle rain . . .
a sparrow attempts the song
his father sang
ravens at dawn
a version of the story
that rings true
spruce-filtered sun
the nonstop nattering
of nuthatches
baby apples
beginning to redden
a catbird’s rambling song
a thrush’s song
deep in the woods —
storm clouds pass us by
