midwinter twilight
one last flight of ducks
lifts off the river
river walk
a mallard with her bill tucked
opens one eye
upriver an eagle
just misses a duck
snowdust
January thaw
a pair of mallards preens
in an eddy
early twilight
ducks in flight lost
in the river’s dark
whale watch —
a pair of surf scoters
outpaces the boat
first day . . .
the surfacing scaup
tosses back a mussel
fading light
two ducks in the river
become rocks
distant thunder
the teal’s reflection
fractured by cattails
