the depth of the dark
at three a.m. then five
self-reflection
across the river
a stand of bare poplars . . .
I put on a warmer coat
November storm
the early dark briefly lit
by lightning
killing frost
a snowy owl quarters
the crimson barrens
Do you see it?
a red-tail’s last pass
late light illuminates
the barren hillside
November hike
gauging the distances
of gunfire
early dusk
a deer in the yard
no one else sees
cold snap
we aren’t ready
for the waiting crows
bleak sky
a soaring gull catches
no light
bluebirds at field’s edge
so many ways
to be happy
significant other
a luminous boulder
owns the field
