the sky slips into autumn blue chicory
morning chill
keeping the warblers
to myself
all the choices
that led to this moment
shadow darner
island dawn
a glimpse of a warbler’s
thousand-mile flight
schoolyard . . .
splitting the husk
to release the chestnut
spy-hopping seals . . .
the shore path overgrown
with wild asters
sun on stone
barnacles open
to the incoming tide
ravens at dawn
a version of the story
that rings true
offshore breeze
a migrating osprey
sails past the lighthouse
spruce-filtered sun
the nonstop nattering
of nuthatches
wild asters
a migrating merlin
dives on the sun
