milkweed drift . . .
flame-red maples frame

wan autumn light . . .
an old Glenwood stove
through the farmhouse window
passing heron —
the old farmhouse windows
boarded up
colorless sunset . . .
silhouettes of turkeys
crossing the orchard
where the fox was . . .
a glacial erratic
split by a crack
last day on the island . . .
a monarch pauses
on some seaside asters
yellowing ferns . . .
with each step down the trail
another sparrow
spruce needle rain . . .
a sparrow attempts the song
his father sang

a full-moon high tide
hides the beach
