8 September 2020 (gulls)

Kristen Lindquist

The other day while we were hanging out on the ledges looking out at Rockport Harbor, my husband said he has always wanted to write something that mentions “the to-ing and fro-ing” of gulls. I told him that would make a good haiku. Here are our two versions:

Paul’s version:

McDonald’s lunch rush

gulls to-ing

and fro-ing

*

My version:

low tide

the to-ing and fro-ing

of gulls

January 11: Birding, Rockport Harbor

Kristen Lindquist

We visited Rockport Harbor this morning to look for a Thick-billed Murre reported there yesterday. This relative of the puffin is a rare sight so close to shore at any time of year, so we felt fortunate that the bird surfaced several times quite close to where we were standing on the wharf. And fortunate too that we didn't have to wait any longer in the cold, raw air for the murre to appear.

Shifting skin of ice.
Diving murre, comfortable
in its element.
