fresh snow
a straight line of tracks
crosses the lake
snow on the river . . .
feeding buffleheads
flicker on and off
—I wrote this one for December 2020 New England Letters (which was shared today) in response to the prompt “surprise”
just a little snow
on each fallen leaf
thoughts lost on waking
an annoying song
stuck in my head
snow turns to rain
rain all night
the river grows
louder
edge of the lake
edge of my awareness
shifting ice
pandemic winter
a cabbage white flutters
inside the window
cold comfort
out of the woodwork
the faces of animals
witch’s butter
the rotting log
comes back to life
stories of Burma
opening a window
to the cold night
Maine woods twilight
a pine tree state
of mind
