first snowfall
only the crows
seem unsurprised
continuing rain
what else can I say
that you haven’t heard
bearberry
just the thought of winter
makes me hungry
dark and stormy night
sharing our stories
of climate change
Written in response to a prompt on Twitter, the kigo (season word/s) “withered fields,” thinking of the small flock of Sandhill Cranes that pauses every fall in farm fields in Smithfield, Maine (central Maine) during their migration south.
withered fields
the voices of cranes
as they circle to land
dia de muertos
shadows of crows passing
through yellow leaves
the fall colors
of the Buddhist monks’ robes
letting go
autumn storm
baring more than our souls
can handle
halloween night
the ghostly forms
of hay bales in headlights
this glowing maple
a moment
of self-revelation
autumn wind
the shape of an animal
beyond the porch light
