heat lightning
a pair of nighthawks flits
over the hayfields
early morning rain
i fall back asleep
with a sigh
the many shades
of late summer
goldfinches on sunflowers
cricket crescendo
my neighbor’s sunflowers
begin to droop
morning has broken . . .
the distant keening
of an osprey
dog days
a white butterfly follows
another white butterfly
morning coffee
filled with warmth
for the backyard crows
thrum of crickets
who can even think straight
right now
meteor shower
the night air thick
with crickets
staring into waves
even this beach stone
was once mud
ripe blackberries
the part of my brain
where poems come from
