shoveling out . . .
waxwings shift places
in the treetops
even larger
with its cap of fresh snow
squirrels’ nest
morning flurries
the snow shovel shelters
a set of finch tracks
the distant twinkle
of a neighbor’s porch light
—passing comet
jet trails . . .
a line of deer tracks marks
the field’s fresh snow
it was snowing
and it was going to snow
cardinal in the cedar

An homage to Wallace Stevens’s classic “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird.” The italicized lines are from the final stanza of his poem.
calm before the storm
the voices of fishermen
carry to shore
ice-glazed snow
the grocery store tulips
shed their petals
wondering if the whispers
are about me
wind-driven sleet
all-day snow the shapes of cranes in flight
Sunday drive
icefalls ladder
the roadcuts
