lingering cold
the distant scold calls
of a hermit thrush
vernal pool . . .
tufts of deer hair
snagged in alders
waxing day moon —
a peregrine swoops down
to her quarryside nest
red maple flowers . . .
any minute now
more rain
scattered snowflakes —
bloodroot leaves curled tight
around their buds
wind chill
a dream of the tropics
resolves into ospreys
the Sunday crossword
takes all morning
spring rain
spring birthday
all the turtles
crowd a log
deep woods
daffodils circle
a cellar hole
a cardinal’s serenade —
overripe strawberries
wait in a bowl
a few hours of sun
mining bees reconnoiter
the bare garden
