the hollow beech
keeps its secrets
wind chill
chickadees pick peanuts
out of the birdseed
cold front
from all directions crows
head for the roost
frozen pipes . . .
out the window a deer
paws the hard lawn
below zero
blackberries from Mexico
purple my fingers
sea smoke
hiding the harbor’s surface . . .
inbound geese
tracks in snow . . .
the lives
after this one
Sunday morning . . .
the slightly louder tick
of freezing rain
inner harbor
ships wrapped in plastic
wait out the winter
snow day
the plow spooks a woodpecker
from the suet
sun on snow
the first sip of my morning
coffee
