it’s always something
crows relay calls up and
down the river
a run of red lights
on the drive home from work
late winter stars
waiting for a call-back
from the doctor’s office
morning flurries
clear and cold
pigeons huddle
on the roof’s sunny side
all-day blizzard
over the roar of the wind
roar of the plow
dripping eaves . . .
from the heated bird bath
a spray of bluebirds
waist-deep drifts . . .
across the frozen marsh
an owl looks back
a rabbit’s silhouette
against the snow drift
sunset chill
the coos
of courting eiders . . .
warm spell
new moon
the jetty dressed
with fresh seaweed
a block of hawthorns . . .
tracking the waxwings
